Custome nursery wall murals are an easy upgrade
I have twins. What does that mean? That I have no time — or at least very little time — to spare for decorating. When my twins were born, I was too busy feeding them, burping them and trying to get them to sleep (hopefully around the same time.)
But I also really wanted their nursery to be soothing and decorated in a way that would delight adults and children alike. I also didn’t want it to look like everyone else’s nursery. So, I went online and began searching for childrens wall murals, kids wallpaper borders, nursery wall murals, you name it.
I looked for a variety of themes, from butterfly removable wall stickers to a pirate wallpaper mural. But the butterfly removable wall stickers wasn’t quite right for my baby boys. I wanted something that would work for when they were older too. And the pirate wallpaper mural was great for older boys, but not quite right for the baby stage. I finally found a nursery wall mural that seemed just right, featuring a pond and a fishing pole and a tree with a door and a window. It was easy to apply (just remember to follow directions and use wallpaper sizing), and even as the boys have gotten older, it’s been great. When they were just toddlers, they even tried to climb into the picture and play on the tree, it seemed so real to them. Plus, when friends and families visit, I always get comments on the “custom” look.
How to get that Tuscan look
A few years back, my mother, an interior decorator, came to visit me. We sat around my house, an old 1930 Tudor English brick home which needed a lot of updating, and talked about what would be possible.
But to me, everything seemed as if it would be out of my price range. I definitely needed DIY options. My mother kept suggesting a nice Tuscan theme in certain areas of the home. The vintage plaster work on the walls and ceilings would be perfect for it, she said. And elsewhere a Tuscan wallpaper mural or border wallpaper could continue the look throughout the house.
I still thought this would be way too much work. Who has time to hang that Tuscan wallpaper mural. And while the border wallpaper can be quite easy, it would still take more time than I had.
Boy, would I learn how wrong I was.
The next day, I had to go to work. By the time I got home, my entire entry way had been faux painted and a Tuscan border wallpaper added — in one day.
The next day, I went to work again, and you guessed it, by the time I came home, there was an entire Tuscan wallpaper mural in my kitchen.
Here’s the key — make sure you use sizing to ensure the wallpaper will go on the wallpaper the right way. The sizing is like a paste, that you put on the walls first. Then, the wallpaper. This allows the wallpaper to dry uniformly so that it won’t pull apart or slip later (especially at the seams).
Just follow the instructions that come with whatever Tuscan mural or border wallpaper you choose. It’s an extra step that’s well worth it.
Back to the theme — why Tuscan? To me, it adds a touch of history and a feeling of sunlight to any room.
It can make a sunroom feel as if you’re about to step outside and pick some grapes.
And in a dining room, it can make for a wonderful ambience during casual dinner parties.
In that old 1930s English Tudor, it warmed the whole house up, which was a challenge in a snowy northern state.
